I was reminded of this simple truth today. If I am listening to my children while they are young and I'm interested in them and the things that they're into, they are going to continue to be open with me as they grow. If I'm too busy, if I'm short with them or if I belittle them, they will probably not continue to share with me.
We are establishing a life-long communication now in the little things like, "look at the picture I drew" or "Mommy, I'm frightened, I had a bad dream" or conversations about the Avengers for the 100th time! They're sharing what's important to them now and I want them to share what's important to them later too.
I want to be a respectful, tender parent. One who my kids want to be around (always). I need God's help in this. I'm naturally selfish. Lord, grow me in love for my children.
